Sviatoslav Richter Live In Kiev (North America Orders) Sviatoslav Richter Live In Kiev (Europe & Asia Orders)
Sviatoslav Richter, undeniably one of the century's greatest pianists, was a legend long before he died on August 1, 1997. Born on March 20, 1915 in Zhymomyr, Ukraine he studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Heinrich Neuhaus and became one of only a handful of musicians who could transcend the art of interpretation by becoming one with the composer. These 17 CD's - one more than the originally estimated 16 - represent live performances from 1958 to 1982 that have never before been released by this internationally famous pianist. Recorded live and unedited, they are of great musical interest and historical value. In short, a goldmine!

"What really matters-beyond the playing itself, of course-is the sound, and here TNC has done an outstanding job. There are a few extraneous noises, and a longish patch in the Liszt Sonata (duly noted in the CD booklet) where the sound drops out completely (TNC is to be congratulated for leaving the damaged tape as is, rather than splicing in the equivalent passage from some other Richter performance). But for the most part, the sound is good or better-and even at its most primitive, it far exceeds anything on the famous recordings made at Richter's 1958 Sofia recital or the recordings that Columbia made during Richter's Carnegie Hall concerts in 1960. All in all, one of the most important releases of the year." Fanfare, July/August 2002, Peter J. Rabinowitz
"Richter played in Kiev all through his career, and in the late 1950s and 1960s the local radio engineers assiduously taped his recitals. Here they are, all new to CD, when he was at the peak of his powers, spread over 17 discs in pretty good sound (though the pianos are not always in good tune) and offering 20 hours of great music-making… If you want to buy just a couple of the sets, I'd go for 1461, 1463, 1473, and 1475--but they're all worth having. What a feast!" American Record Guide, July/August 2002, Morin.
[No. 1 Release of the Year 2002] "…The fact remains that 2002 still brought plenty of important and interesting classical releases, many of them from smaller labels…that are now the shining hope of a battered industry. 1.Richter Live in Kiev. Sviatoslav Richter, piano (TNC Recordings, 16 volumes, available separately): Here is a trove for admirers of the art of Sviatoslav Richter -- some 20 hours of live performances the great Russian pianist gave in Kiev between 1958 and 1982, when he was in his prime…Many of the performances are touched with genius…" Chicago Tribune, Sunday, December 15, 2002, John von Rhein.
